Black Hollyhock (Alcea rosea ‘Nigra’) is a bold and dramatic addition to any cottage or cutting garden. Towering tall with dark, velvety blossoms, it adds depth and striking contrast to mixed flower beds and bouquets. These long-lasting flowers are perfect for floral arrangements, garden backdrops, and pollinator-friendly plantings, attracting bees and butterflies alike. A biennial that self-seeds readily, Black Hollyhock brings architectural presence, rich color, and classic charm to both flower gardens and cut flower collections.

Type: Biennial

Height: 5–8’

Seed Packet Contains: Minimum 25 Seeds

Seed Starting Directions:

Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or sow directly outdoors in early spring or late fall. Sow seeds on the surface of a well-draining seed-starting medium and lightly press in; do not cover deeply. Keep soil lightly moist and maintain a temperature of 65–70° F for optimal germination. Seeds typically sprout in 10–20 days. Transplant seedlings outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and seedlings are hardened off. Space plants 18–24” apart to accommodate mature growth. Black Hollyhocks will bloom in their second year, and self-seeding will provide future plants.

Once an order is placed, we cannot add or subtract items. If you want any additional items not included in your original order, please place a new order. We are unable to combine shipping on separately placed orders.

Please note that we do not ship seeds internationally.
