Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost or direct sow outdoors in early spring or fall. Cold stratification improves germination—either sow outdoors where seeds will naturally experience winter temperatures, or refrigerate seeds in a moist medium for 2–4 weeks before planting indoors. Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly press in; do not bury deeply. Maintain soil temperatures around 65–70° F. Germination typically occurs in 10–20 days. Transplant seedlings outdoors after danger of frost has passed and plants are well hardened off. Space plants 12–18” apart.
