History of the Kissing Ball

The kissing ball, also known as a “kissing bough,” has roots that stretch back to the Middle Ages. In its earliest form, it was made by weaving together evergreens, symbols of everlasting life, and hanging them in doorways to welcome good fortune and ward off evil spirits. By the Victorian era, kissing balls became especially popular during Christmastime. Decorated with holly, ivy, ribbons, fruits, and sometimes even candles, they were hung in entryways as a sign of hospitality and cheer. Tradition held that anyone standing beneath the ball could expect a kiss, making it both a festive decoration and a symbol of love, friendship, and goodwill.
