PepperHarrow Farm offers a full line of handcrafted lavender products made from lavender grown on our 60 acre farm in Winterset, Iowa, just 35 minutes from Des Moines. Our collection includes lavender soaps, salves, candles, essential oils, sachets, dried lavender bundles, and our signature fragrance line. You can shop lavender products online year round at pepperharrowfarm.com, in person at our farm shop during events and workshops, or find us weekly May through October at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market, Gateway Market, and Des Moines Mercantile.
Is PepperHarrow Farm open to the public?
PepperHarrow is a working farm and family home, so it is not open for drop-in visits. All visits are available through online booking at pepperharrowfarm.com.
What animals are on the farm?
The farm is home to Adam and Jennifer's family, three dogs, and several friendly cats who love to welcome guests. The fields are also habitat for butterflies, birds, bees, and a wide variety of native pollinators that thrive in the wildflower areas and lavender fields.
Visiting the Farm
How do I get to PepperHarrow Farm from Des Moines?
From downtown Des Moines, head southwest toward Winterset, the drive is approximately 35 minutes. Full directions will be provided when you book your visit. While you're in the area, we recommend exploring the famous Bridges of Madison County, the Winterset town square, local restaurants, and the John Wayne Birthplace Museum.
When is the best time to visit PepperHarrow Farm?
The farm's growing season runs from May through October. Lavender typically peaks in mid-June through July, which is when we hold our annual Lavender Festival. Summer months (June through September) offer the widest variety of blooms for u-cut experiences and CSA pick-ups. The flower fields are really bursting with color from July through early October. Holiday wreath-making workshops run in November and December.
Can I bring my pet to the farm?
As much as we love animals, pets are not permitted at the farm or at our events. We have several dogs and cats on the property, and visiting animals can be a disruption and a safety concern for guests, vendors, and the farm environment.
Classes & Workshops
What kinds of workshops does PepperHarrow offer?
PepperHarrow hosts a variety of hands-on workshops throughout the year, including floral design and centerpiece arranging, wrapped jar flower arrangements, holiday wreath making, lavender crafting, and propagation house tours. We also offer online digital courses including our Lavender Growers Masterclass and Wildflower Planting guide. Check our Classes + Events page for the current schedule.
How big are class sizes?
We keep class sizes limited to 14 participants. This allows for an intimate and enjoyable experience and gives us the ability to provide every participant with one-on-one instruction. VIP tours are limited to 20 people.
Can I change, exchange, or get a refund for my class ticket?
We do not allow changes, exchanges, or refunds for class tickets. We are a very small operation and our system does not allow us to track these changes. Additionally, we have several guest instructors who have a fixed fee for time and materials. However, you can absolutely gift your seat to a friend if you cannot attend.
The class is sold out. Can you add one more seat?
Unfortunately, we cannot add seats to classes. We keep class sizes intimate for participant enjoyment and for us to be able to give everyone enough one-on-one instruction. Please do not purchase tickets with the intention of squeezing an additional person in. We will not be able to add additional seats and your ticket will not be refunded or exchanged.
Can I bring my child or significant other to a class?
Please keep kids and loved ones at home unless they are a ticket holder. The only exception is for nursing mothers.
What should I wear or bring to a class?
Please dress comfortably and for the weather, and keep in mind that you are coming to a working farm. If you'd like to bring gardening gloves, a water bottle, or any other item that makes you more comfortable, please do. Our event space is temperature-controlled but can run a bit cool during winter and a little warmer during summer.
Do you hold private classes?
We do hold private classes on a limited basis. Please contact us to discuss options and to arrange further.
Can I use a PepperHarrow gift card for classes and events?
Yes! Your gift card can be used toward any purchase on our website and does not expire.
Can I attend a farm to table dinner at PepperHarrow?
Yes! PepperHarrow hosts seasonal farm to table dining experiences on our 60 acre flower and lavender farm in Winterset, Iowa, just 35 minutes from Des Moines. Our al fresco dinners are set among the flower fields and lavender rows, offering a one of a kind evening of locally inspired food, drinks, and the natural beauty of Madison County. Seating is limited and events sell out quickly. Check our Classes + Events page for upcoming dinner dates and availability.

Children under 15 are free but must be supervised by an adult at all times. Tickets must be purchased in advance online — they are not available at the entrance and often sell out weeks before the event.
Will I receive physical tickets?
No. You will receive a confirmation email with a confirmation code, number of tickets purchased, and the date(s). Please bring this on your mobile phone or as a printed copy and we will use it to check you in at the gate. If you purchased group tickets and guests arrive at different times, we can check guests in separately against the original confirmation number. Wristbands will be provided for all attendees to leave and re-enter throughout the day.
Why is my order in pending status?
All tickets will stay in "pending" status until the event has occurred. If you received an email ticket confirmation, that confirms you have purchased tickets and will be attending the festival.

Our fields are not open to the public outside of ticketed events. However, you can purchase tickets to visit on select dates throughout the season. Check our website for availability.
What food and drinks are available at the festival?
Lunch is available as an add-on during ticket purchase, which helps us with a count for the day. Food trucks will also be on-site — menus will be posted closer to the event. Wine, beer, and signature cocktails are available for purchase. A valid government-issued ID is required for guests 21+ wishing to consume alcohol. Refillable water bottles are encouraged. Outside food and beverages are not permitted.
Can I pay with credit cards at the festival?
Farm purchases (beverages, select items) accept cash, check, or credit card. Vendor and food truck payment options vary — some accept only cash. There is no ATM on-site, so please plan accordingly.
What should I bring to the Lavender Festival?
For a comfortable visit, we recommend: a refillable water bottle, sunscreen and bug spray, a sun hat or sunglasses, a picnic blanket or lawn chair, a light poncho in case of rain, and cash for vendors who may not accept cards.
Are there bees in the lavender?
When the lavender is in full bloom, it will be full of various types of bees. They are generally busy gathering pollen to take back to their hive and will not pose a threat to most visitors. However, folks who are allergic to bees should take precautions.
Does the festival run rain or shine?
Yes! The festival takes place rain or shine. We recommend dressing for the weather. The festival is fully outdoors, with the exception of the farm shop. There are shaded areas including patio umbrellas, dining tents, and seminar areas.
Is the festival handicap accessible?
The vendor area is in the grass and may be a bit uneven. The lavender fields are natural terrain and are not wheelchair-accessible.
Is parking free?
Yes! Free parking is available for all ticketed guests. Parking is also available for party buses and carpools. There are no bus stops or train stations near the farm.
Can I bring a pop-up tent?
Due to potential high winds, pop-up tents are not allowed for safety reasons.
Are restrooms available?
Yes! Standard and portable restrooms will be available for all guests.
Can we take professional photos at the festival?
Capturing personal photos during the festival is encouraged! However, due to crowds, professional photography sessions are difficult during the event. If you'd like a private photo session in the lavender fields, these can be booked separately through our Photography Rental page.
How can I sponsor the Lavender Festival?
If you'd like to apply as a sponsor, please email hello@pepperharrowfarm.com with your business details.
Photography Rentals
Can I use PepperHarrow's flower fields for a photo session?
Yes! We offer one-hour photography rental blocks available on the hour via our online scheduling system. You can access our calendar on our Rent the Farm page. Currently, we only offer the farm for professional photographers who carry business liability insurance.
Do I need business liability insurance to rent the farm?
Yes. We require all photographers who rent our farm to carry a business liability insurance umbrella policy.
What is there to take pictures of?
Our farm is bursting with gorgeous photo opportunities. We grow flowers in a rainbow of colors, as well as wildflower fields, and have gorgeous old buildings and scenic views. We highly encourage photographers to research locations on our farm via our Instagram or Facebook pages. This gives a good idea of what's in bloom at different times in the season. The flower fields are really loaded with color from July through early October. Please keep in mind this is a working flower farm — some flowers may vary depending on weather and time of year.
When will sunflowers be in bloom?
This is our most-asked question! Sunflower bloom times depend on the weather and planting schedule. Please follow our social media for updates. We do several plantings a year and will try to have some available from June through the end of September. We cannot estimate or guarantee exact dates for sunflower blooms.
What colors of flowers will be in bloom?
At any given time during our growing season, there's a rainbow of different colored flowers available as a backdrop. We receive this question from clients frequently — please advise your clients to wear solid, neutral colors for the best photos. We cannot guarantee any particular flower will be blooming at any given time.
What if it rains during my session?
Please reach out to us in advance. We offer rescheduled appointments for inclement weather, which you can adjust yourself. However, it must be actively raining during your booking time, or there must be a threat of severe weather. We do not allow reschedules if the fields are simply a bit damp from earlier rain. Our flower fields are generally not muddy or hard to get around in.
What if I miss my appointment?
You can reschedule your appointment up to 1 hour before your session. We do not offer refunds for missed appointments, and we cannot apply your rental fee toward PepperHarrow classes or merchandise.
Can I arrive early to scope out shot locations?
We do not allow early access. We often have another photographer out with their client before your session, and early arrivals can be disruptive. Please do not arrive more than 10 minutes before your session, with access starting at your designated reservation time.
Can I have mini-sessions?
Unfortunately, mini sessions are not allowed.
Can I fly a drone?
Unfortunately, drones are not allowed on the farm.
Can I bring pets to a photography session?
Unfortunately not, unless otherwise agreed upon in advance. We have several dogs and cats around the farm, and visiting animals can be a disruption.
Please be respectful of your appointment time. There are clients booked before and after you. Do not show up early or stay past your allotted time — this is strictly enforced. Please do not pick the flowers, and watch your step to avoid trampling blooms in the flower fields. If you need flowers for your shoot, contact us to purchase them.
Flower CSA & Memberships
What is a Flower CSA?
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. A flower CSA works just like a vegetable CSA, but with fresh flowers. When you join PepperHarrow's Flower CSA, you receive a vintage hobnail vase and access to our flower fields to cut your own stunning bouquet of premium, farm-grown flowers each month. Pick-ups are on the second Saturday of each month, May through September, between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM at the farm. CSA members also get exclusive access to explore the flower fields during their pick-up window.
What types of flower memberships do you offer?
For 2026, PepperHarrow offers several membership options: the PepperHarrow Bloom Membership ($495), a Monthly You-Cut Bouquet Share ($200), a Spring Plant-Cutting Garden Share ($95), a Culinary Herb CSA ($50), and specialty collection shares including Lisianthus ($65) and Lavender ($75) on-farm pick-ups. A Dahlia Bouquet Share ($95) is also available seasonally. Gift certificates are available for all memberships.
Can I share my Flower CSA with someone else?
Absolutely. If you can't make a pick-up, you're welcome to send a friend or family member in your place. Many members split their share with a friend, alternating months. There are no refunds or exchanges on CSA purchases, but the flexibility to gift or share your pick-up makes it easy to get the most out of your membership.
Can I purchase a Flower CSA as a gift?
Yes! We offer a printable Gift Certificate for CSA shares purchased as gifts. You can find the link on our Flower CSA page.
Weddings & Private Events
Can I host a wedding or private event at PepperHarrow?

Bathhouse facilities with a hot water shower and towels are located in our event barn, about a 3–5 minute walk from the tent. Glamping stays are available seasonally through Airbnb.
What is there to do during a glamping stay?
A glamping stay at PepperHarrow is meant to be a quiet escape into the countryside where you can recharge and connect with the land. Inside the tent, you'll find a list of our favorite places to eat, drink, grab coffee, and other local must-see spots. Growing & Gardening
Can you really grow lavender in Iowa?
Yes — and PepperHarrow is living proof. With over 18,000 thriving lavender plants across 4+ acres in Zone 5b Central Iowa, we've shown that lavender can flourish even in Iowa's harsh winters and hot, humid summers. Success requires selecting cold-hardy varieties (primarily English lavender cultivars like Munstead, Hidcote, and the hybrid Phenomenal), ensuring excellent soil drainage, and using specific planting and care techniques adapted to Midwest conditions. We share much more in our Lavender Growers Masterclass.
What is succession planting for cut flowers?
Succession planting is the practice of staggering your planting dates so you have continuous blooms throughout the entire growing season, rather than everything flowering at once. You plant the same variety in waves — typically every 2–3 weeks — so as one planting finishes blooming, the next begins. This is essential for flower farmers who need fresh flowers every week from May through October. Our Succession Planting Calendar maps out exactly when to plant each variety for season-long harvests.
Consulting & Speaking
Do you offer consulting for other farms?
Yes. Adam and Jennifer offer consulting services for aspiring and established flower farmers, covering farm planning, lavender growing in challenging climates, agritourism development, and cut flower business strategy. They are also available as speakers for conferences and events. Visit our Consulting page to learn more.
General Policies
What is your refund policy?
We do not offer refunds on class tickets, event tickets, photography rentals, or CSA memberships. You are welcome to gift your spot or share to a friend if you cannot attend. Lavender Festival tickets are valid only for the specific date purchased and cannot be exchanged.
Do you offer gift cards?
Yes! PepperHarrow gift cards can be used toward any purchase on our website and do not expire.
